The Sounds of Gathering

During the kayitz (summer), we literally think about how to move as a group—how to get campers to leave the tzrif (bunk), gather for tefillah (prayers), or head to a different location for peulat erev (evening program). This can be quite a challenge when so many individuals with different interests, paces, and needs must move as one. But at Camp, we are not only unique individuals; we are also part of several smaller groups and one large community.

Imagine if we had two silver trumpets. Different blasts would signal different actions, whether gathering the entire machaneh (camp) together or moving everyone to a rain location. We might sound both when it was time for aruchat tzohorayim (lunch), but only one when it was time for nikayon (clean-up).

In this week’s parsha, Beha’alotecha, G-d tells Moshe to make two silver trumpets and gives instructions for how they should be used. I love that, since the time of the Torah, we have been thinking about how to gather our kehillah (community) and bring people together in meaningful and effective ways.

While we do not have two silver trumpets at Camp (though maybe we should get them!), we rely on our own tools—schedules, cues, walkie-talkies, and more. Over time, some gatherings begin to flow naturally as campers and staff learn the rhythms of Camp, such as gathering for Kabbalat Shabbat.

This evening, we are eager to come together and celebrate our first Shabbat as a community after an energizing opening few days. I hope you enjoy our first video (below), which captures some of that excitement. And I hope you can imagine that this evening, when I raise my hand, our kehillah will grow quiet, and Gesher will lead us in beautiful prayers.
