The Power of Unplugging: Why Going Screen-Free at Camp Matters

At Ramah Darom, we believe in the magic that happens when kids look up from their screens and into each other’s eyes. Camp is one of the rare spaces left where children can fully unplug—and it makes a world of difference.

In today’s tech-saturated world, opportunities for genuine, face-to-face connection are few and far between. That’s why we intentionally create a screen-free environment at Camp Ramah Darom—so campers can form deep friendships, connect with nature, and be fully present. The benefits of this digital detox are both real and lasting.

According to the American Camp Association, learning how to detach from devices is critical for a successful summer. When campers are free from the constant buzz of phones and tablets, they immerse themselves in the rhythm of camp life—swimming in the lake, singing around the campfire, and participating in meaningful Jewish experiences.

Unplugging at camp fosters real connection—with people, nature, and self—which helps improve mental and emotional health.

We see it every summer at Camp: campers who arrive a little nervous about leaving their devices behind end up thriving. They become more present, more confident, more connected—to themselves, to others, and to the world around them. Taking a digital break encourages creativity, patience, and presence.

Camp becomes a space where kids can try new things, discover new passions, and realize their strengths—all without the pressure to document or broadcast the moment.

We know it’s not always easy to unplug. But we also know it’s worth it.

As you prepare for Camp this summer, take comfort in knowing your child will gain something truly invaluable: the chance to connect—with community, with nature, with themselves, and with the new friends right by their side.
