What an incredible start to Machzor Bet! Arrival day was full of excitement as new and returning campers came together for our traditional fried chicken dinner, followed by singing, dancing, and cheering in the amphitheater—all pointing to an unforgettable Kayitz (summer) ahead. After a full first day of activities, we’re now preparing to welcome our first Shabbat of the session, with hearts full of hope and gratitude.

Driving up to Camp in mid-May, I listened to Dan Senor’s talk at the 92nd Street Y about the future of World Jewry. Many had sent it to me, knowing his words would resonate, especially his deep belief in the power of immersive Jewish summer camps. Children who attend Camp become proud, joyful Jews. They grow comfortable with prayer, feel connected to Israel, and understand the strength of Jewish peoplehood.

Jewish summer camp is a North American innovation—created to nurture Jewish identity by building communities where fun and learning are joyfully intertwined.

On this July 4th, as we celebrate American independence, Senor’s message feels especially relevant. He urges us to double down on the educational institutions that form resilient, connected Jewish identities. That’s exactly what we’re doing here—and what you are doing by choosing to send your children to Camp.

At Ramah Darom, joyful Judaism is everywhere. Campers are guided by role models who are both American and Israeli. They sing Hebrew songs with ruach (spirit) one night and belt out American folk tunes over pizza the next. They feel at home in a vibrant, diverse Jewish community—and in their own Jewish selves.

The creativity, love, and intentionality that define Jewish summer camp—especially this camp—are some of the most powerful tools we have to build a strong Jewish future. And this Shabbat, we will pause to rest, reflect, and celebrate all that we’ve co-created together.
