As we enter our fourth Shabbat together, I’m filled with awe at the AMAZING moments we’ve shared. Our kehillah (community) has learned new skills, formed new friendships, gained independence, and nurtured our Jewish neshamot (souls). This Shabbat, we’ll sing and dance with joy—and, as always, shed a few tears at Havdallah as we prepare to separate not only from Shabbat, but from our summer home until next year.
In this week’s parsha, Korach, G-d instructs Moses to conduct yet another “test” to affirm Aaron’s role as kohen gadol (high priest). Each of the twelve tribal leaders places a staff, inscribed with his name, in the Sanctuary. G-d says: “It shall come to pass that the staff of the man whom I shall choose shall blossom.” (Bamidbar 17:20)
Aaron’s staff doesn’t just bloom—it buds, blossoms, and bears almonds. This powerful image resonates with me: a miraculous force of nature, full of beauty and defying our expectations.
To me, this blossoming is more than proof of chosenness—it’s a metaphor. Under Aaron’s leadership, the people will blossom. By accepting others’ offerings, Aaron and the priests will lift up those entrusted to them, helping them thrive.
And so it is with our extraordinary tzevet (staff). With their guidance, care, and love, our chanichim (campers) blossom. They are in our care not only for fun and friendship, but for spiritual, educational, and moral growth. We pray they continue to grow and flourish throughout the year, not just during the summer.
If you’d like to honor our amazing tzevet, I invite you to make a gift to our Staff Appreciation Fund.
