Where is Camp?
Ramah Darom (Ramah of the South) is located
in the North Georgia Mountains, just two
hours north of Atlanta. Our 122 beautiful
acres of Appalachian Valley, complete with
crystal-clear mountain brooks, a picturesque
lake, and an inspiring 100-foot waterfall,
are surrounded
by the 10,000 acre Chattahoochee National Forest.
The town of Clayton, GA is about a 15 minute
drive from camp.
What is Camp Ramah?
Founded in 1997, Ramah Darom is
the newest overnight camp in the national
Ramah system. Under the auspices of the Jewish
Theological Seminary, Ramah is the camping-arm
of the Conservative Movement. Camp Ramah
provides a religious, educational camp experience
designed to inculcate young people with the
values, philosophy, rituals, and practices
of Judaism in all aspects of everyday life.
To date, there are seven overnight camps
and several day camps throughout North America,
as well as programs in Israel.
Each camp forms
a micro-society fostering social, intellectual,
and religious growth. Along with athletics
and the arts, campers and staff receive meaningful
Jewish education in a context that promotes
an enduring sense of belonging, friendship,
and joy.
Where do the campers at Ramah Darom
come from?
Ramah Darom draws campers from 11
southern states: Georgia, Florida, South Carolina,
North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and eastern
Texas.
Where do the staff members come from?
Many of our staff members are former
Ramah Darom campers and, as such, come from
the south. However, we draw staff members from
colleges and universities all over the country.
We also have about 25 Israeli staff members
each summer.
How old do I have to be to work
at camp?
To work at camp you must have completed
high school by the summer. Most of our counselors
are current college students or entering college
freshmen.
Each summer we also have graduate
and rabbinical students on staff as well as
a number of professional educators, social
workers, and specialists who bring their families
up to camp with them.
When is camp?
The dates of employment at Ramah Darom
for the summer of 2008 are June 2nd thru August 5th.
While most campers attend only one four-week
session, our staff members are expected to
spend the entire season at camp including a
week of training before the campers arrive.
Will
I get days off during the summer?
Yes, each staff member may take up
to six days off during the season. In addition,
staff members occasionally get the
evening off and may leave camp to go into town.
If
I can't be there for the entire summer, can
I still work at camp?
When prospective staff members have
academic schedule conflicts, like high school
graduation or summer semester college requirements,
we sometimes are able to work out arrangements
for them to still work at camp. Likewise, if
you have to leave during the summer for a family
commitment or college orientation, it may be
possible for you to use your days-off to do
so with the director's approval. All of these
issues are handled on an individual basis.
Staff members must submit their situation in
writing,
the director must approve the request, and
the staff member's salary is pro-rated accordingly.
